The most common varieties of safety glass are toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, laminated glass and wire mesh glass, also known as wired glass. Toughened glass is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments, in order to achieve more resistance against breakage. Being one of the most resistant types of safety glass, it is used in a wide range of demanding applications, from cars, buses or other passenger vehicles windows, to shower cabin doors, glass tables, glass doors, refrigerator trays and even all types of cups, mugs, plates and other kitchen dishware and cookware, among others. Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that has the ability to hold together when it is broken, due to the fact that it has an interlayer of plastic between its two or more layers of glass. This interlayer provides high strength to the glass, preventing it from breaking up into sharp pieces and usually producing a spider web cracking pattern, when the impact is not that strong to pierce all of its layers. Laminated glass is most commonly used for vehicle windshields, as well as for many architectural applications. Wire mesh glass has a grid or mesh of thin metal wire embedded within the actual glass, being mostly used in applications that require high heat protection, due to its extreme temperature and fire resistant abilities.
The properties of these types of safety glass can be combined, allowing for the manufacturing of high impact strength glass that is toughened and laminated, and also contains a wire mesh for extra protection.
